On Mother’s Day weekend, Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre is hosting a fundraising event to celebrate the difference that Peterborough’s women — mothers, daughters, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and friends — make in our lives.

The inaugural “For the Love of Mom: Chocolate Tea” takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 9th at the McDonnel Street Activity Centre (577 McDonnel St., Peterborough).

This elegant family celebration will feature chocolate treats by local chocolatiers, a chocolate ice cream bar by Kawartha Dairy, a classic high tea with real china catered by Black Honey and Steeped Tea, and live music by the Summit Strings Trio.

There will also be a silent auction featuring gifts for mom including flower arrangements, Via Rail tickets, and more.

Tickets are $25 each, $100 for a table of four, or $200 for a table of eight and can be purchased at Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre (705-748-5901 ext. 204) or online at eventbrite.ca.

The event makes a great Mother’s Day gift, so reserve your tickets now.

All proceeds from the event will go to Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre, which works directly with mothers in healing from and breaking cycles of sexual violence.

Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre, in partnership with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Peterborough, has almost completed a two-year study called “Lessons from Behind the Door – A Status for Women Canada Project”.

The centre has been working with community services and sexual violence survivors to understand the pathway of healing for women and girls in the City and County of Peterborough when they have experienced sexual violence.

The centre is still seeking women 16 years or older living in the City or County of Peterborough who would like to lend their voices to the project.

If you or someone you know is a survivor of sexual violence, please contact Lisa Clarke at 705-748-5901 ext. 204 or lclarke.ksac@nexicom.net to arrange a confidential interview.

All names will be kept confidential. The study is open to any person who has identified as a woman or girl at any point in their life cycle, regardless of socio-economic status, educational level, age, HIV/AIDS status, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, cultural and racial, ethnic and religious background.
