There are alternatives to be considered that can actually do nature a favour and help address some important biodiversity conservation issues. This event, held in partnership with the Central Lake Ontario and Lower Trent Conservation Authorities will demonstrate how some garden plants can be invasive, and how the Grow Me Instead program of the Ontario Invasive Plant Council promotes non-invasive alternatives. The workshop highlights some important conservation concerns that can be addressed through gardening and landscaping. The workshop will cover options such as providing stopover habitat for migratory birds and supporting populations of pollinator insects and how to successfully garden using native plant species. Cost: Free, including a light lunch and a short walk to look at invasive plants and their impacts on the Millenium Conservation area behind the GRCA office. The Walks have collectively raised more than $9 million. Any one of us, now or in the future, could find ourselves seeking a Dog Guide; but would there be one available when we needed it′ It takes many resources to raise, train, and place a highly skilled Dog Guide. From learning basic house manners to honing the skills required of them in service, it costs up to $20,000 to achieve this goal. This includes transportation for our clients, as well as room and board while training for 2 to 4 weeks at the training school in Oakville. No one should be denied their independence. That is why all dogs are provided at no cost to recipients, and why we raise funds through the Purina® Walk for Dog Guides. For more information please visit www.purinawalkfordogguides.com.

When we launched this event in 2009 it got women and men talking about the prevalence of domestic abuse in our community and how they could help. In 2009, the event rallied the support of over 200 courageous men, bold enough to strut their stuff in red high heels to support women and children who faced violence in their homes. Since that time, nearly 500 men have walked a mile through the heart of Peterborough to show support and to raise awareness and funds. To date, over $135,000 has been raised to support the work of Crossroads Shelter and many courageous men have been walking tall ever since. This enthusiastic response to a local need means that women and their children will continue to have access to the safety and security of a women’s shelter, 24 hour crisis and support counselling and programs that provide longer-term support as their lives are rebuilt.
